Causes for Lockups and Errors
Causes for System Lockups
Some non-INTEL PCI controller chipsets on the motherboard will not allow the WinTV to bus-master video into VGA cards, and therefore will cause a system lockup. All motherboards which use Intel PCI bus controllers work with the WinTV. Also, if your motherboard chipset is compliant to PCI 2.1 specifications, you should be o.k.
Known chipsets that will cause lockups are certain SIS, VIA, UMC, ALI, and some OPTI. Our latest software has some added updates for SIS and VIA incorporated in the software which may address the problem. If the problem persists, sometimes the motherboard manufacturer may provide an updated BIOS which can fix the problem. Also, if the board is based on a VIA chipset, some updates available at VIA's website may also address the issue (www.via.com.tw)
- Incompatible VGA cards like: S3 964, 864, Trident and Cirrus Logic.
- S3 Trio 64 V+ (see README to fix this problem)
- S3 Vision 868 and 968 (as per README)
- VGA cards based on the Nvidia TNT chipsets (STB Velocity 4400) - These VGA cards are not able to share their IRQ with any other device on the system. If they share with WINTV, this may cause a lockup. To fix problems with these VGA cards, the VGA or the WinTV must be moved to a different IRQ setting. To do this, physically move the WinTV to another PCI slot.
- Direct X is not enabled, or not up to date. You can update direct X here.
- Be sure the VGA color settings are set to greater than 256 colors. WinTV will not function properly in 256 color mode.
- If there is/was a different video capture card in the system, there may be drivers or system files related to this device which will cause conflicts with the WinTV and lockup the system. These drivers will need to be removed or replaced.
Lockup Issues due to certain motherboard chipsets
Some "non-Intel" PCI chipsets are incompatible.
Certain motherboards that are based on VIA, SIS, or ALI PCI chipsets may cause system lockups.
If you are getting lockups with WinTV, or black streaking in the picture with a
VIA based motherboard, first try:
- Look in the BIOS for CPU to PCI write buffer. set this to disabled. Also, check the BIOS for a Latency Timer setting. If applicable, change this to a setting of 12 or lower. Also, Enable AGP FASTWRITE Setting in the BIOS(advanced) if applicable. If lockups continue...
- Download VIA's 4 in 1 update. If lockups continue...
- Try moving the WinTV board to another PCI slot in the system. If lockups continue...
- Try obtaining an updated BIOS for the system...
- As a last resort, try using DIB DRAW mode
For SIS Based motherboards:
- Check for a BIOS update with SIS or the motherboard manufacturer
- Look in the BIOS for CPU to PCI write buffer, set to disabled. PEER CONCURENCY- set to disabled.
- Move WinTV to a different PCI slot
- Try using DIB DRAW mode
For ALI Based motherboards:
If the ALI chipset is the ALiMAGiK 1 as used on the Asus A7A266, download and apply the ALI update which should correct the lockup problem. This update is available on ALI's Website. Download and install the latest AGP driver (Version 1.9 or higher).
- Download and install the latest WinTV Driver from here
- Check with ALI for any possible PCI bus updates, or BIOS updates with them or the motherboard manufacturer. Look in the BIOS settings for a "PCI Latency Timer" setting and set this to 8 (some systems may have problems at any greater setting (i.e. 16,32, etc.). If you get bad horizontal lines (with movement) when used with the Soundblaster Live Player 5.1., enable 'Delay Transaction' in the BIOS (or using another soundcard will eliminate the line problem.)
- Move WinTV to a different PCI slot
- Try using DIB DRAW mode
Other "non-Intel" PCI chipsets such as UMC, PCCHIPS(TX PRO, VX PRO, etc.), OPTI, VLSI:
- Check for an updated BIOS or any possible PCI bus updates with the motherboard or PCI chipset manufacturer
- Try using DIB DRAW mode
Here are some things that can be done to fix lockups due to PCI chipset problems.
WinTV driver version 2.2 or later to fix system lockups with some SIS or VIA based motherboards
Some motherboards which are based on SIS or VIA chipsets will lockup when starting to run the WinTV application. This driver fixes many of these problem chipsets.
To install, download this file to your disk. Then run the downloaded .EXE file. It will unzip to a temporary directory on your PC. Then follow the instructions which automatically pop up.
Chipsets tested with this update:
VIA chipsets that work: 2005, 586, 2012(vp3), 82C580VP, 82C586B, 5220 VIA MVP3 100 Mhz
VIA chipsets that still do not work: 2013 (VIA Apollo MVP-100mhz)
SIS chipsets that work: 5503, 5597/98, 530/5595=> (530=VGA Chipset/5595=PCI Chipset)
SIS chipsets that still do not work: 620/5595=> (620=VGA Chipset/5595=PCI Chipset)
Opti chipsets that work: 82C558
Vertical Sync Error message
Sometimes with the VIA MVP3 chipset, you can get WinTV to run but cannot capture video clips (you get a "Vertical Sync Error" message). This can be fixed with a BIOS update for the MVP3 chipset.
VIA web site where you can find BIOS updates for VIA chips
The files that seem relevant are: VIA IDE busmaster driver ver. 2.1.31, VIA AGP driver ver. 2.9, VIA IrQ Routing Driver ver. 1.3, VIA PCI bridge patch.
The patches on the VIA website apply to only certain VIA chipsets, so check exactly which VIA chips you have to see if these patches may be applied or not.

"Data invalid" error when trying to install drivers
If you are receiving this error under WindowsXP, please refer to this document: Data invalid WinXP
If you are receiving this error under Windows2000, please refer to this document: Data invalid Win2000
Possible "workaround" for non-compatible VGA cards
Our latest driver for the WinTV has an added option in the "WinTV Primary" program that will try to make the WinTV run with non-compatible VGA cards. To turn this on, click on Start / Programs / Hauppauge WinTV / Primary then click on the DIB DRAW option and close the program. Then try to open the WinTV application again. It may or may not work.
NOTE: When using DIB DRAW, the quality of the video display will not be as sharp.
Black Screen in WINTV, but audio is OK
Black screens are generally VGA driver related. Black Screen Problem Possible Solutions :
Your video card must have at least 2 megs of memory. If you have only 2 megs of memory you may need to try 640x480 screen resolution at 16 bit high color mode. (Start / Settings / Control Panel / Display / Settings tab)
Use the Performance Tab in the Device Manager (Control Panel / System / Performance tab), choose GRAPHICS , Make sure that the Hardware Acceleration Is set to full. You may still see a black screen even though the Hardware Acceleration is set to full. In this case Microsoft themselves, say bump down the Hardware Acceleration a notch. Click on Apply then OK and re-boot.
Turn OFF the plug and play setting in your BIOS. This will force Windows to assign resources differently and sometimes resolves the black screen. Refer to your documentation or contact the manufacturer of your system if unsure how to do this.
In the WinTV program group (Start / Programs / Hauppauge WinTV) there is a utility called "Primary". Set it to "Allow Overlay" or if it is on "Allow Overlay" try it on "Force Primary". If this fails, try setting it to "Dib Draw".
Make sure you are using the latest drivers for your video card directly from the manufacturer. If you do upgrade the drivers then make sure the color mode was not reset to 256 colors by default.
You may need to re-install DirectX. The latest Direct X may be downloaded from Microsoft.
Sometimes changing the video card refresh rate to "Adapter Default" will correct graphics problems". (Control Panel / Display / Settings Tab / Advanced button / Adapter tab) You may also want to try it on "Optimal"
DirectX may be detecting a previous video card. Boot up in SAFE mode and go to Device Manager (Start / Settings / Control Panel / System / Device Manager) and click on the plus sign next to Display Adapters. If there are any Video Cards listed here that you are currently not using then remove them. (Click on the Name and then the "Remove" Button). Re-Install DirectX based on the information given above.
Always re-boot after making any of the above changes and always be in at least 16 bit high color mode.
Try changing the memory address for the WinTV card to a much higher memory range. Go to Device manager, sound, video, and game controllers, and look at the WinTV properties (video section), under the resources tab. Highlight the memory range, and uncheck "Use Automatic Settings".Then click Change setting. Try setting the memory address to: 78000000-78000FFF (if it does not conflict with anything else) Click OK, and click OK again and you will get the warning message about changing the address manually. Click YES and reboot windows
If you are able to resolve the black screen problem, please reply to: (techsupport@hauppauge.com) and let us know what was done to resolve this.
"BTVID or BT848, no suitable Direct Draw provider. Overlay channel is disabled or VGA driver mode incompatibility error:
This would indicate either that an incompatible VGA card is being used, or updated Direct Draw VGA drivers would need to be installed if it is a known compatible VGA card.
This will also occur if you have a VGA card based on the S3 Virge chip and the 3D Hardware Acceleration was not turned on in DirectX. This can be turned on the the DXtool option of DirectX.
Also check the Hardware Acceleration through Windows. Go to Control Panel - System - Performance Tab, on the bottom you should have a button for Graphics. Click on this and you will get a Hardware Acceleration slider for the Graphics card. Try moving the slider up or down a notch. The 3/4 notch would usually make it work. Click on OK and restart the system. Then try the WInTV again.
Error: "Bad Or Missing Subvendor ID" for WinTV in Device Manager or in the "Inspect.txt" file
This is indicating a problem with the Subvendor ID # on the board. We have a software update to repair this which can be found on the WinTV CD ROM (version 2.0 Or later) from the MISC-Utility-HCWSubID folder.
After running this file, you will need to restart the computer and reinstall the WinTV drivers and application software.
Error: "Connect Pins by name failed" or "Preview Graph" error when attempting to run WinTV2000:
The WDM drivers will cause this symptom if the VGA card does not support Overlay mode, or if the VGA is running too high of a VGA resolution, color, or refresh rate. By turning off the "Allow Overlay" feature in the Registry the VGA card is forced to run in Primary mode. The video should display. Being that it will not work in the Overlay mode properly you would probably be better off running the VFW drivers.
Open up Regedit, to do this click on Start - Run and type in REGEDIT then enter. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hauppauge\Hcwtvwnd and set the "Allow Overlay" key to 0. Close the registry and try the WinTV again.
"Failed to Create TV Window", "Plug 'n Play Hardware Not Detected", or "Get HDL Failed" error when running WinTV2000:
Look in Device Manager - Sound video and game controllers - WinTV Video Section properties. There should be 4 tabs - General, Details, Driver, and Resources. If the Details tab is missing, try changing the Memory Range for the WinTV card. To do this, go to the Resources tab. In here, highlight the Memory range, turn off the Use Automatic Settings option then click on Change Setting. In here, click the up arrow about 4 times to change the value. click on OK to save the settings. Then reboot the computer. Once it has rebooted, look to see if the Details tab comes up in the WinTV Video Section after the reboot. If it is here, then you should be able to get it to work again.
If it is still not there, you should download and install the latest WinTV driver (2.0B or later) which should address this problem.
If the details tab is present (and most likely indicating a problem), this usually indicates a hardware problem with the EEPROM on the WinTV board. This sometimes can be addressed by sending the following information to us:(techsupport@hauppauge.com): Serial #, REV and MODEL # of the board, and the file: HCWPNP.INI, which is located in the C:\Windows Directory.
If this cannot be resolved through software, a board replacement would then be required.

"Capture Device Not Detected" or "Unable to draw this Data Format" or "MMSystem275"error when trying to capture .AVI files
In the Video capture application, try setting the Image Dimension to 160x120 or 320 X 240 and the Image Format to BTYUV. These settings are found under Options - Video Format. Make sure that the image dimension is not set to 160x112 which sometimes defaults when BTYUV is selected. These settings are found under Options - Video Format. Also under Capture from the Menu Bar, make sure that the Brooktree: BT848 Capture driver is checked.
"Your WinTV board does not have a Radio feature" error:
- this is not a radio model board
- If it is in fact a Radio model, then the board was not programmed correctly, and would require replacement.
Uninstalling WinTV Software:
The Program HCWCLEAR.EXE can be used to remove all of the WinTV drivers, software, and registry entries. This can be downloaded (hcwclear.exe) and is also on CD ROMs 2.0 and higher (in the MISC, Utility folder). Copy the file to your Root directory C:\. To run this file click on Start - Run. Then type in C:\HCWCLEAR Choose the option for total removal and click on OK.
Click here for the latest WinTV Drivers and Application.
