WinTV for Windows98

Application and WDM Driver Software

This page contains information to complete the installation of the WinTV software under Windows98 using the Hauppauge WDM driver. It also contains information to upgrade an existing Windows98 system to the most current WinTV driver and application.

There are three steps to complete the installation of the WinTV software under Windows98:

1. Pre-install VGA check
Run the Pre-installation VGA check. This will tell you if your VGA card supports a feature called Overlay Mode.

2. WinTV driver install
Download and install the latest Video for Windows (VFW) or WDM Driver Installation program.
Note: if you installed the Windows98 driver from diskette, for best operation you should install the latest VFW or WDM driver.
Note: You should only install the WDM driver if your VGA supports Overlay Mode!

3. WinTV applications install
Download and install the WinTV32 application. Click here for instructions or click here to download.
You can also install the WinTV-radio application if you have the WinTV model 401 with FM radio. Click here for instructions.
Note: You MUST go through step 2 above before using any of the new WinTV applications! These applications have been based on the latest VFW and WDM driver.

A few notes:

  • Microsoft's WebTV for Windows has strict requirements for the VGA card in your PC. To run WebTV for Windows, your VGA must support the Overlay Mode and must have enough memory.
  • The Windows98 WDM driver will currently only work with NTSC television sources. NTSC is used in North America and Japan.
  • The Windows98 WDM driver does not support Microsoft NetMeeting and will not allow video clip capture. If you would like to use NetMeeting or to capture video clips, please use the VFW driver. This problem will be fixed in the next Windows98 Service pack from Microsoft.

Pre-installation VGA check
Download
This pre-installation check will test to see if your VGA card supports Overlay Mode
To run this program, simply click on the Download button to the left and then run webtvchk.EXE.
Note: .
Overlay Mode is required to run Microsoft's WebTV for Windows. If your VGA card cannot run WebTV for Windows, use the VFW driver to run the Hauppauge WinTV32 application.

Download
Installation instructions:
  • Click the download button to save the Driver Installation program to your hard disk.
  • Now run the Driver Installation program by running WDM123.EXE This program deletes the existing driver and installs the new WDM driver.
Note:
This driver requires a VGA board with "Overlay" capability. If your VGA card cannot support Overlay Mode, you should install the VFW driver.
This WDM driver can only be used in North America. If you are outside of North America, please use the VFW driver.
This WDM driver cannot currently be used to capture video clips or to video conference with Microsoft's NetMeeting. If you would like to capture video clips or video conference, use the VFW driver instead. If you would like to use the WDM driver, but occasionally would like to video conference, you can load both the WDM and VFW drivers on your Windows98 PC, and then run WTVDR418A.EXE when you want to video conference. The run WDM123.EXE when you are finished video conferencing.
