Upgrading your PC to Windows XP
and reinstalling a WinTV PCI board

WinTV works best under Windows XP!

WinTV running under Windows XP has a new feature called "de-interlacer". This feature improves the video quality of TV running on your PC screen. For example, if you've noticed lines in your TV picture when watching a football game, or when watching a news ticker, the WinTV's new de-interlacer will remove the lines.

Note: These installation instructions are for the WinTV PCI boards only. If you have a WinTV-PVR, a WinTV USB or other Hauppauge product, please follow the installation instructions for a Windows 2000 installation on our main support page.

Installation Overview:

If you have previously had WinTV PCI board running under Windows 95, 98 or ME, and are upgrading to Windows XP, you will need to install WinTV using our latest driver and application for Windows XP.

Note: WE RECOMMEND DISCONNECTING YOUR PC FROM THE INTERNET BEFORE STARTING THIS UPGRADE. You can do this by removing your modem or LAN cable from your PC until you have installed the WinTV application (step 5 below). The reason to do this is to prevent the Windows Update program from disrupting the new installation of this driver.
Note: These installation instructions are for the WinTV PCI boards only, including the older WinTV BT848 based boards. For the WinTV-PVR's and WinTV USB products, please follow the installation instructions for a Windows 2000 installation on our main support page.
Note: We are currently working on a new AVI video capture application for use with Windows XP. Please check back for the new video capture application. In the meantime, you can use AMCAP.exe which is found on the WinTV Installation CD-ROM in the MISC/UTILS directory.
Note: Remove any CD-ROM from your CD-ROM drive before installing the updates for WinTV.
Note: Many people report they do not hear any sound from the WinTV after Windows XP was installed. Windows XP mutes audio from the LineIn jack when it is installed, so you must unmute LineIN in the "Volume Control" mixer. The volume control mixer is the "speaker" icon in your device tray, which is normally in the lower right hand corner of your PC screen. Double click on the "speaker" icon, and unmute LineIn.
Note: We recommend printing out these instructions before beginning, since there will be a reboot of your PC halfway through the installation.

The reinstallation of WinTV will require these steps:

  1. Download our latest WinTV driver for Windows XP. Then disconnect your PC from the Internet (see above for an explaination of why we recommend this) until after step 4 is complete.
  2. During the installation of Windows XP, a default Multimedia device was installed. Remove it.
  3. Run the WinTV driver for Windows XP, and then reboot your PC.
  4. The WinTV driver for Windows XP will continue to be installed
  5. Download and run the latest WinTV2000 application

You can now run WinTV2000 and scan for TV channels. The de-interlacer will be activated when you run WinTV full screen. If you would like the de-interlacer to be activated while watching TV in a window, click the Pref button on the WinTV application, then click on the Deinterlace tab and, in the Window setting, click on Deinterlace.

The following are detailed steps on how to reinstall WinTV under Windows XP.

1. Download the latest WinTV driver for Windows XP

Download the WindowsXP driver (wdm331_20112.exe) and save it to a directory you will remember (for example: C:\)
Do not run this file yet!

2. During the installation of Windows XP, a default Multimedia device might have been installed. If so, remove it.

Click on Start.
Click your RIGHT mouse button on My Computer
Click on Properties
Click on the Hardware tab
Then click on Device Manager.
Highlight and delete the Multimedia Devices with yellow question marks under Other devices

Note: you can also find DeviceManager in the "Control Panel" under "System / DeviceManager"

3. Disconnect your PC from the Internet, then run WDM331_20112.exe.

Disconnect your PC from the Internet. You can simply unplug your modem (cable modem or dial up modem) until step 5.

Locate the WDM file you downloaded in Step 1 and run it. When you see the Driver installation, click Next, Next and then Finish. After the software loads, your PC will need to be rebooted.

4. The WinTV driver for Windows XP will continue to be installed
The Found New Hardware Wizard will run. Click Next, Continue anyway and Finish and the video driver should be installed.
After the video driver is installed, the Found New Hardware Wizard will detect an audio driver. Click Next, Continue anyway and Finish and the audio driver is installed.

5. Reconnect your PC to the Internet and download our latest WinTV2000 application.

Reconnect your PC to the Internet. Replug your modem (cable modem or dial up modem).

After the driver update has been installed, you need to install the latest WinTV2000 application with the new video formats.
Download the WinTV application (wintv2k339_20112.exe) and save it to a directory you will remember (for example: C:\)
Run wintv2k339_20112.exe. This will install the updated WinTV2000 application. There is no need to reboot after this.
